A man has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of nine years for a serious assault that left his victim with life-changing injuries.

Shannon Meaney, 34, of no fixed address, received his sentence at Manchester Crown Court today (Tuesday, April 29, 2025) after pleading guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent.

The assault occurred in Clarendon Park, Salford, in February 2023, when Meaney attacked John Lowe, who is now in his 60s. Initially handled by divisional officers, the case was taken over by the Major Incident team later that month as Mr. Lowe’s condition deteriorated and became life-threatening.

Despite the significant time that has passed since the brutal attack, detectives remained focused on securing justice for Mr. Lowe, who now requires round-the-clock care due to the severity of his injuries.

A meticulous investigation led to the identification and arrest of Meaney days after the incident. This included extensive CCTV analysis and forensic footwear comparisons, which matched a trainer footprint found on the side of Mr. Lowe’s head – evidence of the serious injuries inflicted. Meaney subsequently pleaded guilty to the charge.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Higginson from the Serious Crime Division commented on the sentencing:

“Throughout this incident is a man and his loved ones who are having to come to terms with the consequences of this vicious attack which nearly cost John his life.

Since we took on this case, we have faced challenges and setbacks but have remained resilient in securing the best possible outcome. We were determined to do everything possible to ensure Meaney has to face the consequences of his actions knowing the impact they have had on John’s life.

I would like to commend John’s family for their bravery, and the support they have given the investigation, especially his daughter, who has made clear the severe challenges they are continuing to try to overcome.”

In a poignant victim impact statement read to the court, Mr. Lowe’s daughter described the devastating impact the assault has had on her father and the entire family.

“On Tuesday 14 February, our family’s life was tragically changed forever. Our loving, caring, gentle father, who was loved by all in his community for his huge smile and cheeky demeanour, was the victim of a senseless and cowardly attack,” she said.

“Nearing 60 years of age, this brutal attack has left him with life changing injuries and has altered the lives of all our family forever.

We were used to seeing our dad full of energy, the life and soul of the party. This attack has made him a shell of a person and all we can do is witness him deteriorate right before our eyes.”

The sentencing brings to a close a lengthy and complex investigation, offering some measure of justice for Mr. Lowe and his family as they continue to navigate the profound consequences of this violent crime.
