A 63-year-old man from Blackpool, John Heggie of Troutbeck Crescent, has been sentenced to nine years in prison after being found guilty of multiple child sex offences.

The verdict and sentencing took place earlier this month at Preston Crown Court following an investigation by Lancashire Police.

The offences, which involved two children, were reported to the police in 2022, leading to a thorough investigation.

Heggie was subsequently arrested and charged with causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, sexual activity in the presence of a child, and sexual assault on a child.

Detective Constable Tristan Farley addressed the gravity of the crimes, stating, “Heggie’s victims are children – some of the most vulnerable members of our society. He preyed on them and used them for his own perverted sexual gratification. He is a despicable man, and I welcome the custodial sentence handed down on him this month.”

In addition to the prison sentence, Heggie was given an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and has been ordered to sign the sex offenders register.

DC Farley commended the bravery of the victims throughout the legal process. “The victims in this case have been incredibly brave throughout the whole process.

We can only praise them for having the strength to come forward and talk to us. I hope that with Heggie behind bars, they can now begin to rebuild and move forward in their young lives.”

Lancashire Police have also issued a strong message to anyone who may have been a victim of a sexual offence.

“We want to send a message to anyone who may have been a victim of any sexual offence today: if you have been a victim of any sexual offence, please know that you will be listened to, your report will be investigated, and we will do everything we can to get you justice.”

Anyone who has been a victim of a sexual offence is encouraged to contact the police on 101 or make an online report via the Lancashire Constabulary website.
