Counter Terrorism Policing North East (CTPNE) has confirmed that the 38-year-old man arrested following a serious incident on Otley Road in Headingley, Leeds, , has died.

In an updated statement released today, CTPNE identified the deceased man as Owen Lawrence from Headingley, Leeds. He had been taken to hospital with a self-inflicted injury after his arrest.

Police believe Lawrence was the key suspect and acted alone, stating they are not currently seeking anyone else in connection with the matter.

Detective Chief Superintendent James Dunkerley, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing North East, said that a “thorough and extensive investigation” is underway to establish the full facts and circumstances surrounding the incident.

A file will be compiled and passed to the coroner.

“Officers will continue to conduct enquiries and we ask that if anyone has information that may assist, to pass this to police,” DCS Dunkerley urged.

“We understand there are concerns around the incident, and questions about how and why this has happened. Our teams are committed to carrying out an in-depth investigation to provide answers to those affected.”

He added that CTPNE is working closely with West Yorkshire Police to support the local community and thanked residents for their support and understanding over the weekend.

“Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all those affected by this incident,” he said.

Leeds District Commander, Chief Superintendent Steve Dodds, acknowledged the “understandable shock and concern” within the Headingley community.

He assured residents that a “comprehensive visibility and engagement plan” has been implemented, providing an increased police and partnership presence in the area over the coming days.

This presence will be both on the streets and around key community events.

“We are absolutely committed to making sure that people feel safe to go about their daily lives in the area following this incident,” Chief Superintendent Dodds stated.

He reiterated the advice for the public to report any suspicious or unusual behaviour to the police immediately by calling 101, or 999 in an emergency, or by speaking to officers on the ground or venue/event staff.

The nature of the “serious incident” on Saturday has not been explicitly detailed in the statement, but the involvement of Counter Terrorism Policing indicates the potential gravity and complexity of the situation.

The investigation is expected to continue for some time as authorities work to piece together the events that unfolded.
