A 39-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder following an incident in Gatley this morning (Wednesday, April 16, 2025).
Police were called to an address on Altrincham Road at 9:38 am where, tragically, a 93-year-old woman was found deceased inside the property.
Following initial enquiries at the scene, officers arrested the 39-year-old woman on suspicion of murder. She is currently in police custody for questioning.
A police scene is currently in place at the address as investigators conduct their enquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding the elderly woman’s death.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have confirmed that due to previous contact with the deceased, a mandatory referral of the incident has been made to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC).
However, following an initial assessment by GMP’s Professional Standards Directorate, all officers involved remain fully operational.
Detective Inspector Adam Hitchen, the Senior Investigating Officer, commented on the ongoing investigation:
“The priority for our investigation is understanding the full circumstances which led to this tragic incident and getting justice for the victim. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family, who are aware and are being supported by specialist officers.”
He sought to reassure the local community, stating: “We recognise that this investigation may cause concern within the local community, but I want to assure the public that this is an isolated incident, with a swift arrest made, and no wider threat.”
DI Hitchen added that there would be an increased police presence in the area. “You will notice an increased presence in the area today whilst we conduct enquiries, but also across the coming days as the local neighbourhood team look to provide reassurance to those living close by.”
Police are appealing to anyone who may have information related to the incident. Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 101, quoting the log number 726 of 16/04/25.
