Police officers in Blackpool and the Fylde Coast are gearing up to provide a novel form of assistance to the expected influx of tourists this summer with the launch of “Operation Recharge.”
The initiative will see frontline officers equipped with portable power banks and mobile phone charging wires, offering a vital lifeline to visitors whose phone batteries have died.
Recognizing that many tourists rely heavily on their mobile phones for essential information such as hotel bookings, banking access, and contact details for friends, Lancashire Constabulary has invested in six new power banks.
These will be strategically deployed across Blackpool and Fylde, ensuring at least one is available on every police shift.
The initiative aims to proactively address situations where visitors find themselves stranded or vulnerable due to a lack of phone battery.
Police patrols will be highly visible in town centres, ready to offer a charge to those in need. This simple yet effective solution is anticipated to alleviate pressure on police resources and partner agencies who often deal with individuals in such predicaments.
PC Kerry Marrs, who is spearheading Operation Recharge, emphasized the proactive nature of the initiative.
“We know people love to visit the Blackpool and Fylde area during the summer months, be that for a family day out or to enjoy the nighttime economy, and it’s our job to make sure that they have a safe and happy visit,” she said.
“By having these power banks readily available on every shift we are bringing a simple yet effective option to those who are visiting and are unable to access vital information from their phones,” PC Marrs added.
“Anyone who has lost power on their phone, please do come and chat to officers as they conduct their patrols, and we can ensure you get back to your friends or hotel safely.”
The police hope that by offering this readily available charging service, they can significantly reduce the chances of visitors becoming situationally vulnerable, particularly if they have been drinking or become lost.
This proactive approach is expected to contribute to a safer and more enjoyable experience for everyone visiting the popular coastal destinations.
As the weather improves and visitor numbers are set to rise, Operation Recharge is poised to become a valuable asset in ensuring the well-being of tourists in Blackpool and the Fylde Coast.
