
A man in his 50s has tragically died following a powerful explosion at a terraced house on John Street in Worksop.
Emergency services were called to the scene at 7:39 pm on Saturday, April 12, 2025, after reports of a significant blast.
The explosion resulted in the complete destruction of the property where it originated, and neighbouring houses also sustained considerable damage. Despite the swift response and efforts of emergency personnel, the body of the man was discovered within the debris and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Nottinghamshire Police Chief Inspector Clive Collings confirmed the fatality and expressed his condolences, stating,
“This is an extremely serious incident that has led to a man’s untimely death. The man’s family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.”
The incident has understandably sent shockwaves through the local community in Worksop.
As emergency services worked diligently at the scene throughout the night, multiple residents from John Street and the surrounding area were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Nottinghamshire County Council is providing support to those displaced.
An investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the devastating explosion. Chief Inspector Collings assured the public that everyone believed to have been in the vicinity at the time has been accounted for.
He also indicated that the area would remain cordoned off for an extended period to facilitate the ongoing investigation.
“It is likely that the cordon and road closures will remain in place for some time as we carry out our investigations,” he said. He expressed gratitude for the cooperation of local residents and thanked them for their patience during this difficult time.
Police officers will remain in the area to conduct further enquiries, and Chief Inspector Collings encouraged anyone with concerns to speak with an on-duty officer.
He also issued a reminder that flying drones over or near an active emergency response area without permission is an offence and urged the public to refrain from doing so.
Chief Inspector Collings extended his thanks to partner agencies, including Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service and East Midlands Ambulance Service, for their collaborative efforts in responding to the incident.
Authorities are appealing to the public for any information that may assist their investigation.
