As Lancashire basks in continued sunshine, local authorities and emergency services are issuing a strong reminder to the public about the dangers of open water swimming.
Despite the inviting appearance of lakes, reservoirs, the sea, and flooded quarries, these bodies of water remain dangerously cold year-round in the UK and pose significant risks.
The persistent low temperatures can quickly lead to severe cramp and breathing difficulties for anyone entering the water, even on a seemingly warm day.
This can rapidly escalate into a life-threatening situation.
Authorities are urging residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution and adhere to the following crucial safety advice:
* Avoid Open Water Swimming: The safest option for a swim is a supervised local swimming pool with a lifeguard on duty.
* Never Mix Alcohol and Water: Walking near any body of water after consuming alcohol is extremely dangerous and should be avoided at all costs.
* Float to Live: In the event of unexpectedly finding yourself in cold water, the vital advice is to float until you’ve regained control of your breathing.
This technique can significantly increase your chances of survival.
* Call for Help: If you witness someone in trouble in the water, immediately call 999 and ask for the coastguard. It is crucial to never put yourself at risk by attempting a rescue.
“While the sunny weather is a welcome sight, we cannot stress enough the hidden dangers that lurk beneath the surface of our open water,” said a spokesperson for the local emergency services.
“The temperature can be deceptively cold, and the consequences of entering unprepared can be devastating. Please, choose safety and opt for a supervised swimming environment.”
This warning comes as many people may be tempted to cool off in natural water sources during the pleasant weather.
However, the consistent message from authorities is clear: enjoyment of the sunshine should not come at the expense of safety.
Stay vigilant, follow the advice, and help ensure everyone can enjoy the warm weather responsibly.
