A 22-year-old man from Carlisle has been sentenced to 18 years in prison today at Carlisle Crown Court after being convicted of multiple serious sexual offences.

Brian Watson, of Marks Avenue, Carlisle, was found guilty in February following a trial for four counts of rape, non-fatal strangulation, and assault by penetration.

The court heard that Watson committed the offences against three separate victims in north Cumbria between October 2021 and July 2024.

The successful prosecution followed a thorough investigation by Cumberland CID. Detective Constable Josh Daniel, the investigating officer, commended the bravery of the victims who came forward.

“Watson was initially charged and remanded for offences against two victims, when an update issued by the constabulary of his charges saw a further victim come forward,” DC Daniel stated.

He emphasized the difficulty faced by victims of such crimes, saying,

“It is understandably extremely difficult for victims of rape to talk about what happened to them, but by coming forward it has enabled us to bring Watson to justice and empowered other victims to report.”

DC Daniel urged anyone who has experienced a sexual offence to contact the police, assuring them that they will receive support.

“I would encourage anyone who has been victim to a sexual offence to contact police so that our officers can investigate, and you will be supported,” he said.

“Support is available, and the Constabulary works closely with trusted partner agencies to provide the appropriate support which is tailored to an individual’s circumstances.”
