A major incident on the A1 near Denton has left seven police officers injured and led to the arrest of two individuals following a serious six-vehicle collision in the early hours of this morning.
The road remained closed for over 12 hours as crash investigation work continued.
The incident, which occurred after a police pursuit involving a BMW, resulted in five police vehicles being involved in the multi-vehicle crash.
Northumbria Police confirmed that seven of their officers were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
As of the latest update, four officers have been discharged, two remain in hospital for observation, and one is receiving treatment for a leg injury.
Superintendent Michelle Caisley of Northumbria Police expressed her well wishes to the injured officers, stating:
“Firstly, we want to wish all the officers who have been involved in the collision a full recovery.”
She also extended thanks to the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service and the North East Ambulance Service for their swift response and assistance at the scene.
An investigation is now underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the collision.

Supt Caisley urged the public to assist the investigation by coming forward with any relevant information.
“An investigation is under way to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident and ask anyone with information that may assist us to come forward,” she said.
“We would also ask people to avoid speculation both online and in the community which could impact the investigation.”
The extensive road closure caused significant delays for motorists, and Supt Caisley acknowledged this, saying:
“We recognise this incident has caused significant delays and thank motorists for their patience. The road closure has been necessary in order for our collision investigation team to conduct their enquiries.”
Northumbria Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the collision or the events leading up to it, including any sightings or footage of the BMW involved.
They are particularly interested in CCTV and dashcam footage.
Members of the public with information can contact Northumbria Police via direct message on social media, the live chat function or report forms on the Force’s website.

In connection with the incident, a man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. A woman, also in her 20s, has been arrested on suspicion of aiding and abetting dangerous driving.
Both individuals remain in police custody at this time.
The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) confirmed their involvement, stating that their critical care team was activated at 2:38 am following reports of the road traffic collision on the A1 near Denton.
“We had a paramedic and doctor respond on a critical care car and they arrived on scene at 2:51 am,” a GNAAS spokesperson said.
“Our team worked alongside the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) to assess and treat multiple patients. The patients were taken to hospital by a NEAS road crew.”
The A1 near Denton has since reopened after the extensive investigation work was completed.
