Police have arrested a man and a woman in connection with the death of a 60-year-old man who was fatally shot at a residence in Elm Street, Stanley.
Officers from Durham Constabulary were called to the address at approximately 5:20 pm on Saturday, April 5th, following reports of a disturbance.
Upon arrival, they discovered the 60-year-old victim who had sustained gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate efforts of paramedics, the man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the launch of an investigation into the incident, police confirmed this evening, Monday, April 7th, that they have arrested a 37-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman on suspicion of conspiracy to murder.
Both individuals have been taken into police custody and remain there while enquiries continue.
A police cordon remains in place at the Elm Street address as investigators work to gather further evidence.
Detective Superintendent Neil Fuller, the Senior Investigating Officer, expressed his gratitude for the community’s cooperation thus far.
He urged anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward.
“Our officers are carrying out extensive enquiries and I am grateful for the support and co-operation we have received from the community so far,” said Detective Superintendent Fuller.
“I would urge anyone who has yet to get in touch with us to do so. Please don’t assume we already know. All relevant lines of enquiry will be explored.”
He added, “Our thoughts remain with the man’s family at this time.”
Durham Constabulary is appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information that could assist their investigation to contact them by calling 101, or 999 in an emergency, quoting incident number 302 of April 5th.

The investigation into the fatal shooting is ongoing, and police are expected to provide further updates as they become available.
