The city of Manchester is buzzing with anticipation today as rivals Manchester United and Manchester City prepare to clash in a highly anticipated derby match at Old Trafford.

Kick-off is scheduled for 4:30 pm, and with over 70,000 passionate supporters expected to descend on the iconic stadium, significant crowds and travel disruption are anticipated across the city centre and surrounding transport networks.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has put a comprehensive policing plan in place to ensure the safety and security of all attendees and residents.

Chief Superintendent Colette Rose, Head of Special Operations at GMP and the Gold Commander for the Manchester derby, outlined the preparations.

“We are lucky in Manchester to have clubs with passionate fan bases represented across all football leagues – a Manchester derby especially always brings excitement as the city unites in its passions for football,” said Chief Superintendent Rose.

She assured the public that “there is a policing plan in place for Sunday – fans will notice an increased police presence in busier locations and specialist officers will be deployed to ensure fans remain safe and can enjoy the match.”

Given the sheer number of people expected in the city centre, the Old Trafford area, and on public transport and road networks, Chief Superintendent Rose urged supporters to be responsible and plan their journeys in advance. She also reminded fans to “enjoy alcohol responsibly.”

“We want everyone to enjoy the match – anyone with concerns can report them to a police officer or a member of security staff on the day,” she added.

GMP is encouraging anyone attending any football match in the coming weeks to remain vigilant and report any concerns they may have directly to officers on the ground or by calling 101. In the event of an emergency, the public is reminded to always dial 999.

Chief Superintendent Rose concluded with a message of sporting spirit: “Good luck to both teams this weekend.”

As the clock ticks down to kick-off, Manchester is poised for an electrifying derby day, with authorities working diligently to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all involved.

Fans are advised to allow extra time for travel and to follow the guidance of police and stewards throughout the day.
