A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a violent machete attack in a shop on Kentmere Road, Breightmet.
Police were called to the store at approximately 7:50 pm on Saturday (April 5th, 2025) following reports of a man wielding a machete.
Upon arrival, officers found that a man had been attacked inside the shop, sustaining several injuries including to his head and shoulder. He is currently receiving treatment in hospital.
Eyewitnesses, including staff and members of the public, reported seeing the attacker use the machete before causing extensive damage to the shop and fleeing the scene.
Following inquiries, firearms officers arrested a man in his 30s this afternoon (Sunday) on suspicion of attempted murder. He remains in police custody for questioning.
Detective Inspector Lee Shaw, the Senior Investigating Officer from Wigan CID, condemned the attack, stating:
“The incident was witnessed by people in the shop, including children who must have been extremely frightened.”
He further added, “The incident has been captured on CCTV, which shows the suspect swinging a large machete with blatant disregard of various members of the public close to him.”
DI Shaw reassured the public, saying, “We believe this was a targeted attack and the two men knew each other, and we have acted swiftly to ensure a dangerous individual is in custody.”
Despite the arrest, the investigation remains active, and police are appealing for any further information or eyewitness accounts of the incident.
