Durham Constabulary have launched an investigation following the death of a man in Stanley yesterday afternoon.
Police were called to an address on Elm Street at approximately 5:20 pm on Saturday, April 5th, following reports of a disturbance.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a man in his 50s who had sustained a gunshot wound. Despite the immediate efforts of paramedics, the man was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
Formal identification of the deceased has yet to be released, but police have confirmed that his family has been informed and are currently being supported by specially trained officers.
A significant police presence remains in the Elm Street area today as specialist crime scene investigators meticulously examine the location.
House-to-house enquiries are also being conducted by officers in their efforts to gather information and piece together the circumstances surrounding the incident.
A police cordon is currently in place around the scene and is expected to remain for a considerable time to allow for a thorough investigation.
Detective Superintendent Neil Fuller, the Senior Investigating Officer for Durham Constabulary, addressed the tragic event, stating: “This is a truly shocking incident in which a man has been shot and has sadly died.”
He urged anyone with information to come forward, saying: “We are carrying out several lines of enquiry and I would urge anyone who has witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage or CCTV and has not yet spoken to officers to get in touch.”
DS Fuller also acknowledged the impact on the local community and thanked residents for their cooperation.
“Residents may see an increased police presence in the area. I would like to thank them for their support while we carry out this investigation. Our thoughts are with the man’s family at this time.”
Durham Constabulary is appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information that could assist their investigation.
They are asking individuals to call 101, or 999 in an emergency, quoting incident number 302 of April 5th.

The investigation is ongoing, and police are committed to bringing those responsible to justice.
