The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has authorised the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) to charge Russell Brand, 50, with multiple sexual offences, the Met Police announced today.
The charges follow an investigation launched by detectives in September 2023 after a number of allegations came to light following reporting by Channel 4’s Dispatches and The Sunday Times.
The MPS has issued a charge and requisition to Russell Brand, whose date of birth is listed as 04.02.1975 and address as Oxfordshire, in connection with the following alleged offences:
* One count of rape, alleged to have occurred in the Bournemouth area in 1999.
* One count of indecent assault, alleged to have occurred in the Westminster area of London in 2001.
* One count of oral rape and one count of sexual assault, both alleged to have occurred in the Westminster area of London in 2004.
* One count of sexual assault, alleged to have occurred in the Westminster area of London between 2004 and 2005.
Russell Brand is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 2 May.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy from the Metropolitan Police, who is leading the investigation, stated:
“The women who have made reports continue to receive support from specially trained officers.”
He further emphasised that “The Met’s investigation remains open and detectives ask anyone who has been affected by this case, or anyone who has any information, to come forward and speak with police.
A dedicated team of investigators is available via email at CIT@met.police.uk.”
DS Furphy also highlighted the availability of support services, adding, “Support is also available by contacting the independent charity, Rape Crisis at 24/7 Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Line.”
The allegations against Russell Brand first surfaced publicly in September 2023, prompting the Metropolitan Police to launch their investigation. The charges authorised by the CPS mark a significant development in the case.
Russell Brand has previously denied any allegations of sexual assault and rape. He is expected to respond to the charges during his appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court next month.
The Metropolitan Police are urging anyone with information related to the investigation to contact them via the dedicated email address provided. Support services are also available for anyone affected by sexual offences.
