A man in his 50s has suffered significant head and neck injuries after being attacked by a large, aggressive dog in Knott End-on-Sea.
Police were called to Lyme Grove at 10.06pm yesterday (Friday, April 4th) following reports of the ongoing attack.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attack on the man had been sustained, with numerous members of the public attempting to intervene and free the victim before emergency services arrived.
Police officers, including armed response units, attended the scene and found the man with serious injuries to his head, neck, and body.
He was immediately taken to Royal Preston Hospital. While his injuries are life-changing, they are not currently believed to be life-threatening.
Following a search of the area, the dog was located outside a property in Lancaster Close. According to police, the dog ran at the officers. Due to the severity of the injuries already inflicted on the victim and immediate concerns for the safety of the officers, a decision was made by armed officers to shoot the dog at the scene.
No further injuries to members of the public have been reported at this time.
A 40-year-old man from Knott End-on-Sea has been arrested on suspicion of being the owner of a dangerously out of control dog and remains in police custody.
Lancashire Police are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
