Police in Astley have increased patrols along the Bridgewater Canal following a report of a man acting suspiciously and exposing himself on the towpath.

The incident was reported on Friday, March 28th, prompting an ongoing investigation by Greater Manchester Police (GMP).

Neighbourhood Sergeant Paul Bodley confirmed the increased police presence, stating:

“In response to these reported, both high-visibility and covert patrols have been deployed in the area to deter and detect any suspicious activity, and these will remain in place.”

Sergeant Bodley also addressed the circulation of information on social media, urging anyone with direct knowledge of the incident to formally report it to the police.

“We are also aware that anonymous reports and posts have been circulated on social media but not formally reported to GMP,” he said.

“We strongly encourage anyone who has witnessed an incident, been affected, or holds relevant information to contact GMP directly via 101, or report anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 quoting log 0932-280325.”

He emphasized that official reports are crucial for a thorough investigation, enabling officers to identify suspects and prevent further incidents.

The police are also aware of images of a male linked to similar incidents in July 2023 being shared online.

While acknowledging the public’s intentions, Sergeant Bodley requested that such material no longer be posted.

“While we understand the intent behind this, we ask the public to refrain from posting such material, as it may compromise ongoing investigations,” he explained.

He assured the public that “all relevant historic reports are being reviewed as part of our enquiries.”

GMP thanked the public for their cooperation and urged continued vigilance when using the canal.

Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity is asked to report it to GMP on 101, or to call 999 in an emergency.
