A man in his 30s has been arrested after assaulting two police officers who were responding to a domestic-related threat at a property in Lowton, Wigan, on Monday, March 31, 2025.
Officers were called to the address following reports of threats made against a woman and her property. The victim reported that the suspect had indicated he was travelling to her address, causing her to fear for her safety.
Upon arrival, officers located a man matching the suspect’s description in his car outside the property.
During the attempted arrest, the man became aggressive and assaulted the officers, punching one and causing reddening to the eye, and inflicting bruising and a cut to the arm of the second officer.
Back-up was called, and the man was arrested on suspicion of two counts of assault on an emergency worker, criminal damage, child neglect, and drug offences.
Despite the victim’s decision not to pursue prosecution for the initial domestic threat, police confirmed that their swift response ensured her safety and led to the arrest.
The man remains in custody while investigations continue.
Detective Chief Inspector Sarah Bell from the Wigan district emphasized the seriousness of domestic incidents and the priority police place on protecting vulnerable victims.
“Responding to domestic incidents is an absolute priority for us, these situations can be among the most distressing and potentially dangerous calls we attend, and we take them extremely seriously,” she stated.
She also condemned the assault on the officers, saying,
“What is also completely unacceptable is the assault on our officers who attended this incident. These officers were simply doing their job – protecting those at risk.
They put themselves in harm’s way to keep others safe, and violence against them will not be tolerated.”
DCI Bell reassured victims that police are committed to supporting them and taking action against perpetrators.
“We want victims to know that we are here for them, we will listen, and we will act to keep them safe,” she said.
