A man wielding a knife has been fatally shot by police outside Milton Keynes railway station on Monday afternoon, Thames Valley Police have confirmed.

Officers from both Thames Valley Police (TVP) and British Transport Police (BTP) were dispatched to the station on Elder Gate at 12:55 pm following reports of a man carrying a firearm.

Upon arrival, TVP armed officers encountered a white man carrying a knife.

According to the police statement, the man

“moved at speed towards officers with the knife before a shot was fired by police.”

Despite immediate life-saving efforts at the scene, the man was pronounced dead at 1:44 pm.

Chief Superintendent Emma Baillie, Milton Keynes commander, sought to reassure the public, stating,

“We understand that this incident may cause concern locally, but we would like to reassure the community that there is no wider risk to the public.”

The man’s next of kin have yet to be informed, and formal identification is pending. In accordance with protocol, Thames Valley Police has made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which will now conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Police have urged the public to refrain from sharing footage or speculating about the incident online, emphasizing the need for accurate information and respect for the ongoing investigation.

While officers remain at the scene, which encompasses a large area outside the train station, the station itself remains open, and train services are operating as usual.

However, significant disruption is expected at the bus station and taxi rank located outside the station, as these areas are within the police cordon.

Travellers are advised to check for potential alternative travel arrangements.

The incident has caused significant disruption in the immediate vicinity of the train station, and the public is asked to remain clear of the area while the investigation progresses.
