A prolific burglar, Stephen Williams, has been sentenced to 10 months in prison after being caught with a substantial amount of stolen jewellery and watches just hours after a city centre shop was targeted.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, March 25, 2025, when a city centre store was broken into, resulting in the theft of a large quantity of high-value items.
Later that same day, a vigilant police officer stopped and searched Williams, discovering the majority of the stolen goods in his possession.
Williams, of no fixed abode, Lancaster, was promptly arrested and interviewed.
However, he refused to provide any explanation for how he came to possess the stolen items. Further investigation by police placed Williams at the scene of the crime during the burglary.
Charged on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, Williams was remanded to Lancaster Magistrates Court. The court found him guilty of burglary and sentenced him to 10 months imprisonment.
Adding to the severity of the case, it was revealed that Williams was on license and under the supervision of the Probation Service at the time of the burglary. He had been released from Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) only weeks prior after serving time for a violent and unprovoked attack on two members of the public in Lancaster City Centre.
“This swift arrest and conviction demonstrates the effectiveness of proactive policing and the commitment to bringing offenders to justice,” stated a police spokesperson.
“We are pleased to see that this repeat offender has been taken off the streets and held accountable for his actions.”
