Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have intensified their efforts to combat the anti-social and criminal use of e-bikes in Derker, executing a warrant and seizing an e-bike at a residence on Vulcan Street this morning.

The operation underscores the force’s commitment to addressing community concerns and dismantling the networks that enable this disruptive activity.

Residents of Derker have voiced increasing frustration over the reckless and intimidating use of e-bikes, which not only compromises their quality of life but also poses a significant danger to pedestrians and road users.

Criminals are also exploiting these vehicles for illicit activities, including drug trafficking, robbery, burglary, and theft.

GMP acknowledges the complexities involved in tackling this issue, emphasizing that public safety is paramount in any pursuit.

“There’s often a misconception that our officers will not pursue people riding e-bikes anti-socially, and our communities often feel like these issues are left unresolved,” stated a GMP spokesperson.

In the background however, our specialist officers – supported by tactical advisors – work quickly to complete full risk assessments into the situation which is occurring at that time. If the circumstances allow and it is proportionate, a pursuit will be authorised to bring the bike to a safe stop.”

The force is employing a multi-faceted strategy to address the root causes of the problem.

Utilizing specialized resources such as drone units, the Roads Policing Unit (RPU), the National Police Air Service (NPAS), and community intelligence, GMP is proactively identifying storage locations and seizing e-bikes before they can be used for criminal purposes.

Sergeant Joseph Dunne from Operation Vulcan highlighted the significance of the operation:

“The results this morning should send a message to the criminals using these bikes, but also to people who are enabling them by storing and charging these bikes, which are often used to commit crime and intimidate residents.”

He further emphasized the ongoing commitment to monitoring the situation in Derker and taking decisive action. “We will continue to monitor this issue in Derker and take action when required, using resources from across the force to identify who is involved so that we can continue to seize the bikes which are being used criminally.”

Sgt. Dunne also expressed gratitude to the community for their cooperation and urged residents to continue providing information.

“I would like to thank the community for their help so far, the information you share forms a crucial part of our work.

Do you know anyone in your community driving stolen or illegal e-bikes? By telling us who is handling these bikes we can take positive action and prevent further people falling victim to this type of criminality.”

GMP encourages anyone with information regarding the anti-social or criminal use of e-bikes to come forward and assist in their ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of the Derker community.
