A 26-year-old man has been banned from entering Cambridgeshire for three months after stealing over £220 worth of Cadbury Crème Eggs from a Peterborough fuel station.

Deon De Groot, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to theft from a shop at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

The incident occurred on Friday, March 22nd, at approximately 11:40 am at the Tesco Express on Welland Road, Dogsthorpe.

According to police reports, De Groot was observed filling a duffle bag with numerous boxes of the chocolate eggs before leaving the store without paying.

A vigilant staff member promptly alerted passing police officers, who pursued and apprehended De Groot.

Officers discovered a significant quantity of stolen Crème Eggs concealed within De Groot’s jacket. The duffle bag, also filled with boxes of the confectionery, was found nearby.

The total value of the stolen goods amounted to £220.50.

In addition to the three-month ban from Cambridgeshire, De Groot was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison, suspended for one year.

PC Guy Cunningham, who made the arrest, praised the swift action of the Tesco Express staff. “Thanks to the quick reaction by staff who flagged us down, we were able to catch De Groot red-handed and return the stolen items to the store,” he said.

9The incident has garnered attention due to the sheer volume of Crème Eggs involved, highlighting the unusual nature of the theft. The stolen confectionery has been returned to the Tesco Express store.
