Blackburn residents faced significant disruption and safety concerns last night and into this morning as a large waste fire near Grimshaw Park prompted road closures and a public health advisory.
Four fire engines from Blackburn, Chorley, Darwen, and Hyndburn were dispatched to the scene at 18:35 to combat the blaze, which involved a substantial quantity of waste.
The incident generated a large volume of thick smoke, leading Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service to issue a warning to residents.
“Due to the quantity of thick smoke coming from the site, people who can see or smell the smoke are advised to keep windows and doors shut whilst firefighters extinguish the fire,” stated a spokesperson for the fire service.
They also indicated that firefighters were expected to remain at the scene for an extended period, likely throughout the night.
The severity of the fire necessitated the closure of several key roads in the area.
Lancashire Police confirmed the following road closures: Mosley Street, Crossfield Street, and Grimshaw Park at the traffic lights on Russell Street.
“We anticipate that the road will be closed for some time,” Lancashire Police announced in a statement released early this morning.
“In the meantime, we’d recommend looking for an alternative route and driving carefully, leaving plenty of extra time to get to your destination.”
Police have urged drivers to exercise caution and allow for potential delays while emergency services work to contain the fire and manage the situation.
They have also assured the public that they will provide updates as the situation develops.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Residents are advised to continue following the safety advice issued by the fire service and to stay informed about road closures through official channels.
