Liam James Watson, 32, of Scarborough, has been sentenced to ten years in prison for a vicious attack on his ex-partner.

The sentencing, which took place at York Crown Court on Thursday, followed his conviction for grievous bodily harm (GBH), possession of an offensive weapon, criminal damage, and a racially aggravated public order offence.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, when police received a report from the Ambulance Service about a woman who had been stabbed in Scarborough.

The victim, Watson’s ex-partner, suffered severe injuries and was airlifted to the hospital.

During the trial, the court heard that Watson had been argumentative and verbally abusive towards the victim.

He then launched a violent assault, placing her in a headlock before stabbing her in the abdomen with a knife. The victim initially believed she had been punched, but discovered the stab wound when she noticed blood and saw Watson holding the weapon.

Witnesses reported seeing Watson dispose of the knife on a rooftop in Scarborough, which was later recovered by police.

Following his arrest, Watson repeatedly spat inside the police vehicle’s holding cage and, while in custody, subjected a police officer to repeated and horrific racial abuse. The police vehicle and custody holding area required extensive cleaning due to his actions.

Detective Constable Stephen Monty from Scarborough CID said,

“The victim in this case was subject to a nasty violent attack by Watson, and I commend her for having the courage to bravely face him in court by giving evidence in the witness box.

No one should have to undergo any form of verbal or physical violence. As with this case, the police are here to listen to you and are committed to providing the necessary support to help bring you justice. I hope the sentence will give the victim a sense of closure and enable her to move on with her life.”

He also addressed Watson’s behavior towards the police officer, stating,

“Watson also subjected one of my colleagues to some horrendous verbal abuse.

This outcome also shows that we will not accept physical or verbal assaults on our officers or staff. Quite simply, it will not be tolerated and where appropriate you will be prosecuted.”

Watson will serve a ten-year prison sentence for his crimes.
