A major incident has been declared in Hastings, St Leonards-on-sea, East Sussex, following the discovery of explosive chemicals at a property on the A259 Marina.
The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team confirmed that the chemicals found inside the address on Thursday, March 20th, pose a significant threat to life.
A 100-metre cordon has been established between Caves Road and Sussex Road, extending north to include some properties on West Hill Road.
Police have contacted all residents within this area and are urging those who remain inside the cordon to evacuate immediately for their own safety.
Sussex Police have emphasized that at this time, the incident is not believed to be terror-related.
Well-established plans are in place through the Sussex Resilience Forum, which brings together various organizations to prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies.
Hastings Borough Council has set up a rest centre at the Royal Victoria Hotel for residents who have been displaced by the evacuation.
The A259 Marina is currently closed between Caves Road and Sussex Road.
A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of producing illegal substances and making an explosive substance for an unlawful purpose.
He remains in police custody.
Superintendent Michelle Palmer-Harris stated,
“This is a complex but isolated incident, being supported by multiple agencies, resulting in the necessary evacuation of properties immediately surrounding the address for safety reasons.
I would like to thank those residents affected and the wider community in St Leonards for their patience and support.
The declaration of a major incident allows emergency services and other partner agencies to work together effectively to keep the public safe.”
Authorities have assured the public that they will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
Residents are advised to stay away from the cordoned area and follow the instructions of emergency services.
