Woman in Her 20s Killed in Collision Close To The Strand; Driver Arrested and Bailed

A tragic collision in Aldwych on Tuesday, March 18th, has resulted in the death of a young woman and serious injuries to another.

Metropolitan Police are continuing their investigation into the fatal incident.

Emergency services responded to a call at 11:41 am following a collision involving a van and pedestrians near King’s College London’s campus, close to The Strand.

Sadly, a woman in her 20s was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her family has been notified and is receiving support from specialist officers.

A 27-year-old woman was transported to the hospital, where she remains in serious but non-life-threatening condition.

A 23-year-old man, also injured in the collision, was taken to the hospital and has since been discharged.

The driver of the van, a 26-year-old man, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.

While in custody, he was further arrested on suspicion of drug driving offences. He has since been bailed with conditions as the investigation progresses.

Detective Chief Superintendent Christina Jessah, overseeing policing for the area, expressed her condolences and commended the swift actions of emergency responders and the public who attempted to assist the victims.

“This was a tragic incident which has deeply affected the community,” she stated. “I commend the actions of the emergency services and members of the public, who provided aid to those involved who tried to save this young woman’s life and help the others who were injured.”

She also addressed online speculation regarding the incident, emphasizing that it is not being treated as terrorism-related.

“We are aware of inaccurate speculation online about this incident being terrorism related.

We ask the public to refrain from this speculation to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation and avoid causing further suffering to the family of the young woman,” she said.

Chief Superintendent Thomas Naughton of the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command reinforced the ongoing investigation’s complexity and priority.

“Our team is continuing to establish the facts around this extremely upsetting incident,” he said. “The investigation remains in the early stages and officers continue to gather CCTV and obtain witness statements from those at the scene.”

Police are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.
