A devastating collision on The Strand has resulted in the death of a young woman and serious injuries to two other pedestrians.
Police are investigating the incident, which occurred at approximately 11:41hrs on Tuesday, 18 March.
Officers responding to the scene found a van had collided with multiple pedestrians.
Tragically, a woman in her 20s was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other pedestrians were transported to hospital; one is suffering from potentially life-threatening injuries, while the other sustained minor injuries.
The driver of the van, a 26-year-old man, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and driving with a concentration of a specified controlled drug above the legal limit. He remains in police custody.
A crime scene has been established as officers conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that the incident is not being treated as terrorism-related.
“This is a deeply tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the young woman who lost her life,” said a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police.
“We are working to establish the full circumstances of the collision, and we urge anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information to come forward.”
