A dramatic high-speed pursuit through the streets of Doncaster culminated in the arrest of a 28-year-old man suspected of burglary and numerous other offences, South Yorkshire Police have reported.

Body-worn video footage has captured the moment a response officer brought the suspect to a halt.

The incident began when officers identified a Ford Transit van believed to be involved in a break-in at a construction site in Armthorpe.

Upon attempting to stop the vehicle, the driver refused to comply and instead initiated a dangerous escape attempt.

PC Luke O’Donnell, a response officer, engaged in an authorised pursuit, during which the suspect drove erratically, repeatedly driving on the wrong side of the road and even venturing into a farmer’s field.

The chase, lasting approximately 14 minutes, saw the suspect reaching excessive speeds before abandoning the van and attempting to flee on foot.

PC O’Donnell, along with supporting officers and a police dog, quickly apprehended the suspect.

A subsequent search of the van revealed two bags of white powder, suspected to be Class A drugs, alongside an electric syphoning kit with a petrol pump and 94 25-litre drums.

“After being notified of a burglary in progress at the construction site, response officers mobilised quickly to get to the scene and pursue an offender,” stated PC O’Donnell. “The manner of the suspect’s driving was erratic and reckless, with other drivers forced to brake harshly due to him overtaking vehicles and driving at excessive speeds in a bid to get away from police.”

PC O’Donnell emphasized the severe impact of commercial burglaries on victims and the local community, reaffirming the police’s commitment to apprehending and bringing offenders to justice.

The 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of multiple driving offences, possession of Class A drugs, going equipped to steal, fraud, and criminal damage.

He remains in custody as investigations continue.
