A 32-year-old man from Blackpool has been sentenced to eight years in prison for a series of violent offences committed in Kendal in January 2024.

Jack Slaven, of no fixed abode, received his sentence at Carlisle Crown Court today, March 18th, after pleading guilty to attempted robbery, two counts of assault against an emergency worker, and theft.

The court heard that on January 26th, 2024, at approximately 6:15 PM, Slaven launched an unprovoked attack on a teenage woman who was walking home alone along the river in Kendal.

Approaching her from behind, Slaven wrestled the victim to the ground, restraining her in a terrifying ordeal that lasted several minutes.

Fortunately, a concerned passer-by witnessed the assault and intervened, causing Slaven to flee the scene.

Following the attempted robbery, Slaven proceeded to a nearby supermarket, where he stole a variety of items, including meat, tinned goods, and sweets.

A swift police investigation was launched, leading to Slaven’s arrest later that evening.

During his detention, Slaven’s violent behaviour escalated as he assaulted two police officers, attempting to headbutt and bite them.

Slaven will not be eligible for release until he has served a minimum of five years of his sentence.

Detective Constable Ewan Breeze commented on the case, stating,

“This was a completely unprovoked attack which could easily have resulted in serious injuries had a member of the public not intervened.

After attempting to steal his victim’s handbag, Slaven then went on to commit further serious offences, and I am glad he was quickly identified and arrested following this. The sentence Slaven received today is justified and reflects the gravity of his offences.

The victim, who has remained anonymous, is receiving support following the traumatic incident.
