Child Critical, Four Others Hospitalized After Walsall House Fire

A serious fire on Redwood Road, in the Yew Tree Estate of Walsall, has left a child with potentially life-threatening injuries and four others hospitalized for smoke inhalation.

The incident, which occurred on Saturday evening, prompted a large emergency response.

West Midlands Ambulance Service received a call from the fire service at 10:16 PM, dispatching a significant number of resources to the scene.

These included five ambulances, four paramedic officers, the Hazardous Area Response Team, and two Critical Care Cars from Midlands Air Ambulance.

Upon arrival, paramedics found nine people requiring assessment.

A spokesperson for the ambulance service detailed the severity of the situation:

“Firstly, a child who was assessed and had sustained potentially life-threatening injuries. He received advanced trauma care from ambulance staff at the scene before being conveyed to Birmingham Children’s Hospital with medics travelling on board for further treatment en route.”

In addition to the critically injured child, four other individuals were treated for smoke inhalation.

“Four further patients; two women, a man and a teenage male were assessed and received treatment for the effects of smoke inhalation from ambulance staff at the scene before being conveyed to Walsall Manor Hospital for further assessment,” the spokesperson added.

Four other individuals were assessed at the scene but did not require hospital treatment. They were given self-care advice and discharged.

West Midlands Fire Service deployed eight appliances to the incident, indicating the scale of the fire. In a statement, they said,

“We have attended a significant incident this evening on the Yew Tree Estate, where we had 8 appliances in attendance, alongside our blue light partners.

We will be on scene throughout the night, so please avoid the area where possible.”

Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.

Residents in the area have been advised to avoid Redwood Road as emergency services remain on the scene.
