Ian Lawrence, a Family Liaison Coordinator, has been awarded the prestigious Police Staff Member of the Year at the inaugural National Police Staff Awards.

His dedication and unwavering support for victims and their families in the long-running investigation into unlawful drugging at Blackpool Hospital has been recognized nationally.

The investigation, which began in 2018, involves over 100 patients and their families who were affected by the actions of two former healthcare professionals who unlawfully drugged patients.

Despite facing significant budget cuts in 2019, which led to the removal of Family Liaison Officers, Lawrence volunteered to continue providing vital support to the affected families single-handedly.

The National Police Staff Awards, which received over 1,100 nominations across seven categories, celebrate the crucial role police staff play in delivering effective policing.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper attended the awards ceremony, held at The College of Policing, to honor the winners.

Lawrence’s nomination was put forward by Deputy Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) Laura Lawler, who praised his exceptional commitment.

“As the Deputy SIO, I meet the families with Ian on a regular basis, and without fail they are always full of praise about the support they receive from Ian. He really does do a fantastic job,” Lawler stated.

“For the past five years, Ian has been outstanding in how he has maintained contact with the victims and families.

Maintaining their trust and confidence in this long-standing investigation has been our absolute priority, and Ian has certainly gone above and beyond in ensuring that this has been achieved.”

The Blackpool Hospital investigation has been ongoing for nearly six years, and Lawrence’s consistent presence has provided a crucial lifeline for the families involved.

His ability to maintain their trust and provide consistent support has been instrumental in keeping them informed and reassured throughout the complex process.

Upon receiving the award, an emotional Ian Lawrence said, “I am deeply honoured and grateful to receive this National Police Award. The role of a Family Liaison Coordinator is a vital and important role in a major police investigation, and I feel privileged to continue supporting the families in this investigation.”

The award highlights the often-unsung work of police staff and their vital contribution to ensuring justice and support for victims.

Ian Lawrence’s dedication serves as a testament to the impact individuals can have on their communities, particularly during challenging and prolonged investigations.
