A prolific burglar who targeted multiple homes in Preston city centre has been sentenced to six years and nine months in prison.
John Stoddard, 53, of Ryde Street, Hull, admitted to a string of burglaries that saw him steal approximately £20,000 worth of goods, including electrical items, designer clothing, and jewellery.
Between December 2024 and January 2025, Stoddard broke into four properties in Preston, causing significant distress to the homeowners.
Following a thorough investigation by the South Residential Burglary Team, he was apprehended in Yorkshire on February 12th, 2025.
He was subsequently charged with four counts of burglary and four counts of theft.
Appearing at Preston Crown Court, Sessions House, on Thursday, March 13th, Stoddard pleaded guilty to three counts of burglary and handling stolen goods.
The court heard how his actions had violated the security and peace of mind of the victims, leading to his lengthy custodial sentence.
The successful conclusion of this case highlights the ongoing efforts of Lancashire Constabulary’s Operation Defender, a force-wide campaign dedicated to tackling residential burglary.
The operation focuses on:
* Locating and arresting offenders: Bringing those responsible for burglaries to justice.
* Crime prevention advice: Educating residents on how to secure their homes and deter potential burglars.
* Victim support: Safeguarding and supporting victims of crime, ensuring they are at the heart of investigations.
“This sentencing sends a clear message that residential burglary will not be tolerated in Preston,” said a spokesperson for Lancashire Constabulary.
“We are committed to protecting our communities and will continue to work tirelessly to bring offenders to justice.
Operation Defender plays a crucial role in these efforts, and we encourage residents to take advantage of the crime prevention advice available to them.”
The police urge anyone with information about burglaries or suspicious activity to contact them immediately.
