South Wales Police have made significant progress in their investigation into the murder of Joanne Penney, who was fatally shot at her home in Llys Illtyd, Talbot Green, on Sunday evening.

Five individuals are now in custody in connection with the incident.

Detective Chief Superintendent Ceri Hughes confirmed that police were called to the address at 6:10 PM on Sunday, where they found Joanne Penney, who had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest.

Despite the efforts of emergency services, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Our thoughts are with Joanne’s family and friends at this time and we will do everything we can to support them,” said DCS Hughes.

A 42-year-old local man, initially arrested on Sunday night, remains in custody.

In a significant development, two men and two women were arrested in the Leicestershire Police force area on Monday night and are now being questioned.

The investigation has revealed that two vehicles, a distinctive beige Nissan Note and a black Volvo XC40, travelled from the Leicester area into South Wales after 10:30 AM on Sunday, before leaving shortly after the shooting.

Both vehicles have been seized and will undergo forensic examination.

DCS Hughes is appealing to the public for information, particularly regarding the movements of these vehicles.

“We need information about the movement of these vehicles and their occupants, including any dashcam footage, particularly from commercial vehicles, for any journeys on Sunday,” she stated.

Police are also seeking dashcam footage or CCTV from around Llys Illtyd and the nearby retail park between 5:30 PM and 6:30 PM on Sunday, which may have captured the vehicles or any witnesses.

“The investigation has continued at pace, and we are working hard to establish a motive for Joanne’s killing. We are exploring several lines of enquiry, including the possibility that she was the victim of mistaken identity,” DCS Hughes revealed.

She urged anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward, emphasizing its potential importance to the investigation.

Chief Superintendent Steve Jones acknowledged the community’s support and addressed the concerns of local residents.

“I understand that an incident such as this will cause a lot of concern among local residents,” he said.

“You will see an increased police presence in the area, both as part of the investigation into Joanne’s death and to reassure the community.”

The South Wales Police are continuing their thorough investigation and are determined to bring those responsible for Joanne Penney’s death to justice.
