A Crawley man who subjected a woman to a decade of horrific rape, assaults, and controlling behavior has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Wojciech Burylo, 50, of Calvin Walk in Bewbush, was found guilty of multiple counts of rape, making threats to kill, and battery.
Between 2014 and 2024, Burylo subjected his victim, a woman in her 40s, to relentless physical, sexual, and psychological abuse.
He used extreme violence and threats of murder, including decapitation, to control every aspect of her life.
The victim endured over 40 calls a day from Burylo, demanding to know her whereabouts and threatening her with violence.
The victim bravely reported the abuse to Sussex Police in January 2024. Burylo was arrested but initially released on bail with strict conditions and a Domestic Violence Protection Notice.
However, within an hour of his release, he violated these conditions by using a stranger’s phone to contact the victim and continued to send her threatening messages.
He was promptly re-arrested and remanded in custody, where he continued to send threatening letters to his victim.
At Lewes Crown Court, Burylo was found guilty of three counts of rape, three counts of making threats to kill, and one count of battery. On Monday, March 10th, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with 15 years to be served in custody and an additional five years on extended license.
He was also issued an indefinite restraining order against the victim and will be placed on the sex offenders’ register for life.
HHJ Chapple, who presided over the case, described Burylo as “obsessional, controlling, coercive and dominating,” and stated that he had made his victim’s life “a misery.” He commended the victim as a “brave and remarkable woman.”
Detective Inspector Darren Taylor of Sussex Police praised the victim’s courage, stating,
“Wojciech Burylo thought he could keep his victim under his control through years of appalling violent, sexual and psychological abuse. But he underestimated her, and in 2024 this incredibly brave woman told Sussex Police about his monstrous crimes. We listened to her, and we believed her. She was taken to a place of safety and, thanks to her, Burylo is now behind bars.”
He added, “I hope the end of court proceedings allows her some sense of closure, as she looks to rebuild her life without any risk of further abuse from Burylo.”
Sussex Police urged anyone experiencing similar abuse to come forward, emphasizing their commitment to supporting victims and bringing perpetrators to justice.
