City Centre Lockdown: Suspicious Package Triggers Controlled Explosion

Nottingham city centre experienced significant disruption this morning after a suspicious package was discovered near Market Square, leading to several road closures and a controlled explosion.

Police were alerted to the item, believed to be a battery pack for an electric scooter, shortly after 4.30am on Monday, March 11, 2025.

The discovery was made in Long Row, prompting immediate action from Nottinghamshire Police.

Acting out of an abundance of caution, officers swiftly closed surrounding streets to ensure public safety while further investigations were conducted.

Explosive ordnance disposal experts were called to the scene to assess the potential threat.

Following a thorough examination, a controlled explosion was carried out.

Fortunately, the experts determined that the item posed no risk to the public.

Detective Inspector Lisa Jones expressed gratitude to the public for their cooperation during the incident.

“This incident caused significant disruption in the city this morning and we would like to thank the public for the patience and understanding shown while necessary investigation work was carried out,” she stated.

“Although this item was found to pose no risk to the public, the person who discovered it did exactly the right thing by reporting their concerns to us.”

The incident highlights the importance of vigilance and prompt reporting of suspicious items.

Nottinghamshire Police have confirmed that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the discovery is now underway.
