Motorists faced severe disruption on the M6 near Preston following a significant collision involving a heavy goods vehicle on Monday afternoon.

The incident, which occurred between Junction 31 and Junction 32, resulted in a large diesel spillage and substantial damage to the central reservation, necessitating an emergency full closure of the northbound carriageway.

The collision, which saw the HGV collide with the central reservation, triggered an immediate response from emergency services and National Highways.

The resulting fuel spill required extensive resurfacing work, leading to the prolonged closure.

National Highways confirmed via their X (formerly Twitter) account that the northbound carriageway would remain closed until at least 6 am on Tuesday morning.

“The M6 in Lancashire remains closed northbound between J31 and J32 near Preston to allow for emergency resurfacing works to take place following a collision which resulted in a large diesel spillage,” they stated.

“Works will be ongoing into the night. There are still severe delays.

The southbound carriageway was reopened, but the incident caused significant knock-on effects for local traffic. Commuters travelling through Preston, particularly along the A6 London Road and A59 at the Tickled Trout junction, experienced heavy congestion as drivers sought alternative routes.

Reports emerged of motorists being trapped in gridlock for upwards of seven hours.

The emergency resurfacing work is being carried out to address the damage caused by the fuel spill, ensuring the safety of road users.

Highway maintenance crews are working through the night to complete the necessary repairs and reopen the northbound carriageway as soon as possible.

Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes and allow for extra travel time.

Local residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel in the affected areas.

Updates will be provided by National Highways as the situation develops.
