Motorists are facing significant disruption on the M6 in Lancashire as a closure on the northbound carriageway between Junction 31 and Junction 32 near Preston has triggered severe delays and miles of stationary traffic.
Reports indicate that northbound traffic is experiencing approximately 3.5 miles of standstill, with drivers facing lengthy waits as they approach the closure.
The incident has also had a knock-on effect on the southbound carriageway, where a lane closure has resulted in a 90-minute delay and a staggering 8 miles of congestion.
Traffic in and around Preston is also very heavy.
This is due to an earlier collision involving a heavy goods vehicle colliding with the central reservation around 1pm on Monday afternoon. All three emergency services rushed to the scene, and authorities confirmed the driver was receiving treatment.
Motorists are being strongly advised to seek alternative routes to avoid the affected areas.
“We are aware of the severe delays and are working to manage the traffic flow as best we can. However, we urge drivers to consider alternative routes if possible to minimise further congestion.” Said a spokesperson for National Highways.
Updates regarding the reopening of the affected lanes and carriageway are expected to be released as soon as they become available.
Drivers are advised to monitor local traffic reports and official channels for the latest information.
