Stockport Interchange Shut Down After Double-Decker Bus Fire

Stockport Interchange was closed to the public on Sunday evening following a significant vehicle fire involving a double-decker bus.

The incident, which occurred just after 6:30 p.m. on March 9th, prompted a swift response from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS).

Three fire engines, dispatched from Whitehill, Offerton, and Stockport Central fire stations, arrived promptly at the scene.

Firefighters, equipped with breathing apparatus, tackled the blaze using two hose reels, successfully extinguishing the fire after approximately forty minutes.

“Just after 6.30pm this evening (Sunday 9th March), three fire engines from Whitehill, Offerton and Stockport Central fire station were call about reports of a vehicle fire involving a double decker bus at Stockport Interchange.

Crews arrived quickly at the scene. Firefighter wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels to extinguish the fire. Firefighters were in attendance for around forty minutes,” a spokesperson for GMFRS stated.

The BeeNetwork, the primary bus operator serving the interchange, issued an urgent advisory to passengers.

“Due to a vehicle fire, Stockport Interchange is closed until further notice.

Please board or alight at the bus stop before or after Stockport Interchange. We apologise for any inconvenience caused to your journey,” the post read.

The closure of the interchange has caused significant disruption to bus services, and passengers are advised to seek alternative routes and allow extra travel time.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
