Authorities urge anyone who has been a victim of these scams to report it to Action Fraud immediately.
A growing wave of online scams is targeting homeowners across the UK, with fraudsters using social media platforms to advertise non-existent services, particularly discounted carpet cleaning.
Authorities are warning users to be vigilant and verify businesses before engaging with them.
The scams typically involve overseas accounts posting enticing offers on platforms like Facebook Messenger, often accompanied by stolen images from Google. These accounts promise incredibly low prices for services such as carpet cleaning, deep cleaning, or even gardening, aiming to lure unsuspecting individuals.
“These scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated,” warns local cybersecurity expert spokesperson. “They use compelling visuals and aggressive messaging to pressure people into clicking on links or providing personal information. Clicking on these links can lead to malware being installed on your device, compromising your accounts, and potentially leading to identity theft.”
Many victims report receiving unsolicited messages with links to external websites or requests for immediate payment via unsecure methods. Once the victim has clicked the link or provided payment details, the scammers disappear, leaving them out of pocket and potentially vulnerable to further attacks.
“It’s a distressing situation for many,” says a spokesperson for the local authorities.
“People are looking for affordable services, especially during the current economic climate, and these scammers are exploiting that vulnerability.”
Key Tactics Used by Scammers:
* Stolen Images: Scammers often use professional-looking images taken from Google or other websites to create a false sense of legitimacy.
* Unbelievably Low Prices: Offers that seem too good to be true almost certainly are.
* Urgent Messaging: Scammers often pressure victims to act quickly, claiming limited-time offers or immediate availability.
* Links to Unsecure Websites: Clicking on these links can lead to malware downloads or phishing scams.
* Requests for Payment via Unsecure Methods: Avoid paying through methods like untraceable bank transfers or cryptocurrency.
Tips to Stay Safe Online:
* Verify Businesses: Always check the legitimacy of a business before engaging with them. Look for a professional website, a registered business address, and contact information.
* Read Reviews: Check online reviews on reputable platforms like Google Reviews, Trustpilot, or Facebook Business Pages.
* Seek Recommendations: Ask friends, family, or neighbours for recommendations on trusted service providers.
* Be Wary of Unsolicited Messages: Exercise caution when receiving unsolicited messages offering services, especially from unknown accounts.
* Never Click on Suspicious Links: Avoid clicking on links sent via Messenger or email from unknown sources.
* Use Secure Payment Methods: Pay for services using secure methods like credit cards or PayPal, which offer buyer protection.
* Report Suspicious Activity: Report any suspicious activity or scam attempts to the social media platform and Action Fraud.
* Keep Software Updated: Make sure your antivirus software and operating system are up to date to protect against malware.
