A 42-year-old man has been sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for the rape and assault of a woman in Toxteth, Liverpool, last year.

Salih Mahmoudi appeared at Liverpool Crown Court on Friday, March 7th, where he admitted to charges of rape and Section 47 assault.

The court heard that on August 21st, 2023, at approximately 3:30 a.m., Mahmoudi encountered a woman in her 30s on London Road. They subsequently walked to Falkner Street, near Crown Street and Oxford Street. It was there, inside a derelict building, that Mahmoudi subjected the woman to a violent assault and rape.

In addition to the custodial sentence, Mahmoudi was also issued a 15-year restraining order against the victim and placed on the Sex Offender’s Register indefinitely.

Detective Constable Laura James, who led the investigation, condemned Mahmoudi’s actions, stating,

“To target a woman who was on her own and subject her to such a violent attack is truly shocking.”

She acknowledged the complexity and length of the investigation and expressed hope that the conviction would provide some measure of comfort to the victim.

“While no sentence will repair the damage Mahmoudi inflicted on this woman, I hope this conviction provides her with some comfort,” she said.

Detective Constable James emphasized the commitment of the police to protecting victims of sexual offences.

“We are committed to protecting victims of sexual offences, and anyone who reports an incident to us will be safeguarded and supported throughout the investigation by Specially Trained Officers and Sexual Violence Advocates who will provide all the relevant support,” she stated.

She urged anyone who has been a victim of a sexual offence or has concerns about someone’s safety to come forward.

“Anyone that has been a victim of a sexual offence, is concerned for the safety of someone they know or suspects someone to be engaging in this criminal activity, should come forward and speak to us,” she said.

“We have a team of dedicated staff who will expertly and compassionately deal with your reports and we will do everything we can to bring offenders to justice.”

Anyone with information or who wishes to report a sexual offence is encouraged to call 101 to speak with specially trained officers. Alternatively, information can be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111. In an emergency, always dial 999.
