Aaron Grant, 42, of no fixed abode (NFA), was sentenced to seven years imprisonment at Manchester Crown Court today, Thursday, March 6, 2025, for the brutal and unprovoked stabbing of a man celebrating the New Year.
Grant, who was found guilty of unlawful wounding with intent, was also handed a lifelong restraining order against his victim.
The horrifying attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday, December 30, 2023, at approximately 2:45 am.
The victim, who had been enjoying a festive gathering with friends, suffered six knife wounds to his back, flank, head, and hand.
The court heard how Grant, who had been drinking with the group, became increasingly aggressive throughout the night, boasting and making unwanted advances towards a woman. When the victim challenged his behaviour and asked him to leave, Grant’s aggression escalated.
Following a brief altercation, Grant launched a vicious attack, stabbing the unarmed victim multiple times. The victim initially believed he was being punched, but quickly realised the severity of the situation as blood poured from his wounds. Disturbingly, Grant then stood over his bleeding victim, taunting him with the words, “Look at you now.”
The victim, bleeding profusely, fled the address and attempted to reach Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI). Grant pursued him down the street, knife still in hand, continuing his taunts. The victim eventually reached the hospital, where he received emergency treatment for his life-threatening injuries.
Grant was arrested later that day after returning to the scene. During a 999 call reporting his presence, Grant could be heard in the background admitting to the stabbing.
Detective Constable Muller condemned Grant’s actions, stating, “This was a callous attack on an innocent and unarmed man who was simply trying to enjoy his evening. He did not expect to be stabbed by a dangerous offender within his own home.”
During police interviews, Grant admitted to the stabbing but claimed he acted in “excessive self-defence” because the victim was larger than him. When questioned about when he believed his actions became excessive, Grant chillingly replied, “When I got the knife.”
“I am pleased we have managed to secure a good sentence and put him away from harming others,” DC Muller added.
