A devastating incident at Kendal Rugby Union Football Club has resulted in the death of a 10-year-old girl and injuries to an 8-year-old, Cumbria Police have confirmed.
The tragic collision occurred at approximately 4:58 pm on Tuesday, March 5th, on a sports pitch at the club’s Shap Road grounds. A black BMW i4 was involved in the incident, striking the two young girls.
Sadly, the 10-year-old, who resided in Kendal, succumbed to her injuries.
Specialist officers are providing support to her grieving family during this incredibly difficult time.
The second child, an 8-year-old girl also from Kendal, was transported to hospital for treatment. Thankfully, her injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Police have arrested a 40-year-old man from Lancaster on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in police custody as investigations continue.
“At this time, there is no indication to suggest that this incident was a deliberate act,” a spokesperson for Cumbria Police stated.
The force is conducting thorough investigative inquiries to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the collision, which will inform a future coronial process.
The community is reeling from the tragic event, and a multi-agency response has been initiated to provide support to those affected.
Police are appealing for witnesses who directly observed the collision to come forward.
