A 17-year-old e-bike rider has been banned from driving and referred to a youth offender panel after a dangerous pursuit through Blackpool streets, Lancashire Police have confirmed.

The incident, which occurred several weeks ago, saw officers engage in a chase after the teenager was spotted riding his e-bike recklessly. The pursuit culminated in a tactical stop, forcing the rider off the bike.

The rider subsequently pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and failing to stop for police.

Details released by Lancashire Police reveal the extent of the teenager’s dangerous behaviour.

He was seen cutting across tramlines, riding through football pitches filled with children, and weaving through Stanley Park on a busy Sunday afternoon. Officers emphasized that his actions put himself, other road users, and pedestrians at significant risk.

“Not only did the rider cut across tramlines and paths, football pitches full of children and Stanley Park on a busy Sunday afternoon, but he rode extremely dangerously, putting other road users, pedestrians and himself at great risk,” a police spokesperson stated.

The force highlighted the growing concern over the dangerous use of e-bikes and e-scooters, citing fatal collisions and serious injuries throughout the county.

“We have had fatal collisions and serious injuries throughout the county, caused by e-bikes and e-scooters. We know that the public want to see more done to tackle antisocial driving in this way,” they said.

In response to public concerns, Lancashire Police reiterated their commitment to tackling this type of criminality. “We want to let you know that we understand your concerns and are listening. We will continue to target anyone intent on this type of criminality on Lancashire’s roads,” the spokesperson added.

As a result of his guilty plea, the 17-year-old has been banned from driving for 12 months and will remain disqualified until he passes an extended driving test.

He has also been referred to the Blackpool Youth Offender panel for 12 months, and his e-bike has been confiscated.

Lancashire Police urged the public to report any incidents of dangerous driving. Reports can be made by calling 101, or in cases of immediate danger, by calling 999.
