A devastating incident at Kendal Rugby Union Football Club has resulted in the death of a child and serious injuries to another, after they were struck by a car on the club’s pitch.
Cumbria Police responded to reports of the collision at 4:58 pm today, March 5th, at the Shap Road ground. A black BMW i40 had collided with two children on the playing field.
“Police can confirm that one of the children involved has sadly died,” a spokesperson for Cumbria Police stated. “The second child involved in this collision is being treated by paramedics.”
The immediate families of both children have been informed and are receiving support.
The driver of the vehicle, a man in his 40s, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He is currently in custody.
Specialist investigators are on the scene, and a cordon has been established as they conduct their initial inquiries.
“We are treating this collision as an isolated incident, and there is no suggestion at this time that this is terror-rlated,” the police spokesperson emphasized.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, with many expressing their grief and offering condolences to the affected families.
