MP Tim Farron and Kendal Rugby Club release statement On Pitch Horror Crash

A devastating incident at Kendal Rugby Union Football Club has resulted in the death of a child, Cumbria Police have confirmed.

The collision, involving a car and two children, occurred on a pitch at the club’s Shap Road grounds at approximately 4:58 pm today.

Police officers, paramedics, and specialist investigators were immediately dispatched to the scene. Tragically, one child was pronounced dead at the scene. The second child involved is currently receiving treatment from paramedics.

The incident involved a black BMW i40. The driver, a man in his 40s, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is currently in police custody.

Cumbria Police have confirmed that the immediate family members of both children have been informed.

The area has been cordoned off as investigators conduct their initial enquiries.

“We are treating this collision as an isolated incident and there is no suggestion at this time that this is terror-related,” a police spokesperson stated.

Tim Farron, MP for Kendal, expressed his deep sorrow, saying,

“This is devastating, utterly heartbreaking news. I’m praying for the children and for their families and friends. Our community in Kendal is stunned and in mourning.”

Dr. Stephen Green, Chairman of Kendal Rugby Club, released a statement expressing the club’s profound sadness.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm that an incident occurred today at Kendal Rugby Club, resulting in a tragic loss of a child’s life. Our thoughts are with their family and friends, and we kindly ask for privacy for all involved at this difficult time.

We are cooperating fully with the authorities as they conduct their investigation – the Club and all facilities are temporarily closed while this is carried out.

Cumbria Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
