A 58-year-old man from Lancaster has been sentenced to eight months in prison after being convicted of seven shoplifting offences and breaching a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO).

Anthony Monaghan, of Green Street, Lancaster, appeared before Lancashire Magistrates on Saturday, March 1st, where he faced charges relating to a series of shoplifting incidents. The court heard that Monaghan had repeatedly disregarded both the law and court orders.

The presiding judge, in passing the sentence, condemned Monaghan’s “flagrant disregard for people, their property and court orders.”
The case highlights the severity with which the courts treat persistent offenders and those who breach CBOs, which are designed to curb anti-social behaviour and criminal activity.

Police Sergeant Andy Hill of the Wyre Neighbourhood Policing Team (NHPT) commented on the sentencing, stating, “Criminal Behaviour Orders are granted upon conviction and are used to tackle the most persistent anti-social individuals who are also engaged in criminal activity. We have secured a number of CBOs across Wyre, which is just another tool we have to tackle this type of behaviour.

This sentence just goes to show how serious the courts take persistent offending and breaching of CBOs.”

The NHPT emphasized that CBOs are a crucial part of their strategy to address ongoing criminal behaviour and protect local businesses and residents.

The successful prosecution of Monaghan serves as a clear message that repeated offenses and breaches of court orders will be met with significant consequences.
