Man Dies After Assault in Lewisham Pub, Murder Arrest Made

A 42-year-old man remains in custody on suspicion of murder

A 63-year-old man has died after being assaulted following a disturbance at a pub in Lewisham High Street, London. A 42-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Metropolitan Police officers were called to the scene at 8:39 PM on Saturday, March 1st, following reports of an assault. Upon arrival, officers and paramedics discovered the 63-year-old victim suffering from life-threatening injuries.

He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. His family has been notified and are being supported by specialist officers.

Preliminary investigations suggest the assault occurred after a disturbance within The Watch House pub on Lewisham High Street. A 42-year-old man was apprehended near the scene and is currently in custody at a south London police station.

Detective Chief Inspector Craig Magee, from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, appealed for witnesses, stating,

“This tragic incident happened in a busy part of south-east London. We would like to hear from anyone who was in Lewisham High Street or at The Watch House pub and has information about what happened.”

He added, “We have spent the night at the scene and there will be an increased police presence in the area today while we continue to gather evidence. I recognise the concern a crime of this nature causes. We have a suspect in custody, and based on the enquiries carried out so far, we do not believe there to be any risk to the wider community.”

The police are urging anyone with information to come forward. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information that could assist the investigation is asked to call 101, quoting CAD 6267/01Mar.
