An appeal has been launched by investigators following the tragedy
The quiet seaside town of Filey is reeling after the tragic death of an 80-year-old woman, whose injuries, initially believed to be from a fall, were later determined to be the result of a hit-and-run collision.
The incident occurred on Station Road around 9 a.m. on Friday, February 28th. Emergency services initially responded to a report of a woman having fallen, but sadly, she passed away in hospital later that day. Subsequent investigations by North Yorkshire Police have revealed that her injuries were caused by a collision with a vehicle that failed to stop at the scene.
The victim, described as wearing a distinctive red coat and using a walking aid, was a familiar figure to many in the local community. Her loss has left a profound sense of sadness and shock.
“It’s absolutely heartbreaking,” said a local resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “She was always out and about, a friendly face. To think she was left there, injured, is just devastating.”
Police are now urgently appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage to piece together the events leading to the tragic incident. They believe the vehicle involved was a white van.
“We are deeply saddened by this loss and are determined to find those responsible,” stated a spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police.
“We are asking anyone who may have seen the woman walking on Station Road, or who may have witnessed the collision itself, to come forward. Even the smallest detail could be crucial to our investigation.”
The appeal is particularly focused on anyone who may have seen the woman in her distinctive red coat and using her walking aid in the moments leading up to the collision.
A man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is currently in police custody for questioning. However, the police are still urging anyone with information to come forward.
“We need to bring closure to her family and ensure that justice is served,” the police spokesperson added.
Anyone with information is asked to email the Major Collision Investigation Team at MCIT@northyorkshire.police.uk or call 101 and pass information for incident number 12250037457.
The community of Filey mourns the loss of a cherished member, and hopes that those responsible will be brought to justice.
