Man receiving medical treatment after vehicle burst into flames on the M6

The motorway is closed in both directions whilst emergency services deal with the incident

Emergency services rushed to the scene of a serious incident involving a vehicle fire on the M6 Motorway this afternoon at 1pm.

Both carriageways between Junction 36 for kendal and Junction 34 for Lancaster in both directions were closed, the northbound carriageway has since reopened.

All three emergency services are currently in attendance along with the air ambulance.

The carriageway is expected to be closed with major delays expected on Friday afternoon.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said earlier:

“We want to update you and let you know that the M6, J35 – J34, North and Southbound is currently closed due to a road traffic collision.

We anticipate that the motorway will be closed for some time whilst we assess the situation.

In the meantime, we’d recommend looking for an alternative route, such as the A6.

We’ll keep tabs on what’s happening and we’ll update you here once we know more.”

In an updated statement Lancashire Police said:

“We were called to a report of a fire in a car on the M6, between junctions 34 (Lancaster) and 35 (Carnforth), just after 1pm today.

Emergency services, including our officers are currently at the scene, and the M6 is closed in both directions.

A man is receiving medical treatment.

Anyone with information or footage is asked to call 101 quoting log 0647.”

National Highways posting on X said:

“The #M6 south in #Lancashire is currently closed J36 (#Kendal) – J34 (#Lancaster) due to an @LancsPolice led Incident. All emergency services are working at the scene with #TrafficOfficers assisting with strategic closures.

The northbound is also held for Air ambulance to attend.”
