Two people including child left injured in M65 collision

Two men from Nelson have been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving

Emergency services rushed to the scene of a road traffic collision on Wednesday night.

The collision happened close to Junction 12 for Brierfield on the M65 Motorway shortly before

The carriageway was closed overnight to allow a full investigation to be carried out.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said:

We’re appealing for information after a collision on the M65 left two people, including a child, injured.

We were called to a report of an initial collision at around 8:15pm, between a Mercedes E63S and an Audi S3 on the M65, near to Junction 12 (Brierfield.) A Ford Fusion has then collided with the Mercedes.

The driver of the Mercedes, a man in his 20s suffered serious injuries, and the passenger of the Mercedes, a young boy, suffered injuries, which are thankfully not thought to be life threatening or changing. Both were taken to hospital for treatment.

No one else was injured in the collision.

Two men, aged 20 and 26, both from Nelson, were arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Sgt Tom Malley of our Roads Policing Unit said: “This collision has left a little boy injured. 
“Although two arrests have been made, our investigation is very much ongoing, and that is why I’m now appealing to you.
“If you witnessed the collision, or have dashcam footage, please get in touch. If you have footage of the Mercedes or the Audi prior to the collision, we’d also ask that you contact us.”

A spokesperson for Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service said:

At 20:27 on 26th February 2025, four fire engines from Burnley, Nelson, Bamber Bridge, and Chorley, along with the water bowser from Leyland, attended a road traffic collision involving persons trapped on the M65 westbound between junctions 12 and 11.

Firefighters released one casualty from a vehicle. Crews remained in attendance for two hours.
