A man has been arrested and remains in custody following the incident
Emergency services rushed to the scene shortly before 1pm on Wednesday afternoon, close to the B & M Bargains Store in Carlisle Street.
On arrival, they found a man with a serious stab wound to his leg.
It is believed that the man injured is a security guard at B & M Bargains Store and was attempting to detain a shoplifter before being knifed in the leg.
The unnamed man in his 40s was airlifted to hospital, where his condition is described as very poorly. A man has since been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and robbery.
A cordon remains in place around the scene, and Lancashire Police have confirmed this is not being treated as a terror related incident. The force also advised people to refrain from unhelpful speculation online.
In a statement released earlier, Lancashire Police said:
“You may have seen a significant police presence in Preston city centre this afternoon and we wanted to tell you why.

Our officers have attended and found a man in his 40s had suffered a stab wound to his leg. He has been taken to hospital where his condition is described as very poorly.
A man has now been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and robbery and remains in custody.
